The Existential Crisis of a Bird in Space

by Mary E. Lowd

Flying higher
Than wings could carry her
But trapped behind
A pane of glass
Is this what she wanted?
Was she asked?
Such a trade
Invades the soul
She wants to go
Out where the stars fly free
But she’s not a star
So she’ll watch them from afar
Behind a spaceship window
