The Iris Dragon

by Mary E. Lowd

Irises don’t know they’re flowers
Thinking they’re made of tougher stuff
—the boldness of purple!
—their petals’ tower-like fold!
Like tiny castles
Fortresses in a field
Swaying on lengthy stems

The dragon allows the delusion
Fancying such fanciful ways
Offering quiet protection
