The Impossibility of Being Understood

by Mary E. Lowd

When everything connects to everything else
In an ever twisting
Ever winding
Ever tangled
Infinite path, and so you can’t
Explain
Without delving into backstory
That requires more backstory
Every strand leading to another strand
Until eventually, it’s impossible
To be understood

And we’re all left drowning
In the infinitely deep wells
Of our own individual existences
