What can I say about “All the Cats of the Rainbow“? It’s the last story I wrote for The Necromouser and Other Magical Cats. I hadn’t planned to write another story, but “Cold Tail and the Eyes” turned out so much sadder than I expected…
I wrote “Cold Tail and the Eyes” at the Wordcrafters Ghost Story Weekend where everyone writes a ghost story between Friday and Saturday dinner — then Saturday evening, we all read our ghost stories aloud to each other. I’d been planning my story all week before reaching the retreat, and writing it went very smoothly. Happy with how it turned out, I was eager to share it with the rest of the writers, but when I looked up after finishing reading it, everyone in the room was crying.
I realized that my anthology — which was supposed to be finished — now felt unbalanced, and it needed a jolt of sunshine to bring it back to center. “All the Cats of the Rainbow” is that jolt of sunshine.
