Distracted by a Song

by Mary E. Lowd

She asked you a question
You missed it
Insisting she listen
To the music playing
Over the cafe’s speaker system
Your favorite song
It had been too long
Since you heard it
But now she’s wondering—what?
You’ll have to ask
And she’ll think you’re a fool
But you can live with that
As the melody lingers
And reminds you why
You love what you love
You are what you are
And so you ask:
“Will you please repeat that?”
