The Ancient Cat Queen

by Mary E. Lowd

She’ll live forever
Just to spite
The pretenders
To her throne

They think they own
A piece of the future
But she didn’t nurture
An empire just to turn
To dust and stone
As it has finally grown
Into a world worth ruling

Who do they think they’re fooling?
She’s always known
They’re after her
And she’ll never submit
To time or age
Or the feeble requests
Of those who’ve made
Less of themselves
Than her
