Fear of Falling

by Mary E. Lowd

A short flight
—something normal—
That happens every day
Every night

Something easy
Barely a thing at all

Unless you fear
You might fall

An everyday occurrence for the bird
Is a life-changing experience
—death stared in the face
& deferred—
For a mouse to whom flying is absurd
