There have always been better writers in the world; even if you’re an expert genius, some other writer will be better at some types or aspects of writing than you. Those writers, though, don’t have essentially infinite patience to sit with you and let your personal preferences and desires solely guide them in what they write.
If you write because there’s something missing from the world, then it’s a meaningful development that AI is now actually capable of writing at a level where it has a chance of realizing those missing pieces and bringing them into existence.
Certainly, there are a lot of different reasons for writing, and any given writer will have different reasons at different times or on different projects. But these new developments are significant and worth thinking about. Ignoring them makes about as much sense as ignoring the invention of typewriters and word processors — some people have done that. But also, those were both tools that really changed and opened up the way that people were capable of interacting with written works.
I have always known that the way I write is highly influenced by the ease with which a word processor lets me reorganize my thoughts even as I’m writing them down. It’s worth being at least curious about what effects the help of a highly skilled AI could have.
