Shell Beach

by Mary E. Lowd

A crescent of sea in the sky
A glittering span of sand
Towers reach
Into the breach
Where stars sparkle all around

Is it a mirage?
A plaything for a higher power
Experimenting on lowly crawlers—
Mere crabs on a beach
Tossed & toyed with
Facing ploys to test their mettle

Would you settle here?
Knowing what you know?
Scuttle across an idyllic shore
Never more the master of yourself
But maybe
Gifted with a life you could adore
