Taken for Granted

by Mary E. Lowd

You used to be someone I planned with
But now you’ve become someone I manage

I don’t want to rethink our entire dynamic
But you take what you need from me
And I’m left paying for it
I’m out of cash now
And so from now on, I think you’re gonna have to ask

I don’t want to dig into our past
But was it always like this?
Or did you change?
Did we change?
Or is it just you?

I can’t always tell
The difference between us anymore
I don’t want to be like this forevermore
But I think it’s been like this since the beginning
I can’t always remember that far back
But I know: I don’t want to go back
And maybe that’s a sign
About the way it’s always been
