“The Event Horizons on Mount Olympus” is a Greek mythology and space opera fusion album, executed in a musical style inspired by ‘80s weird synth pop and ‘60s California surf rock.
“I Knew the Eagle” is a song inspired by Prometheus, taking the position that he’d have still stolen fire from the gods, even if he’d known the punishment it would lead him to endure.
Sharing fire with everyone was worth enduring the eagle.
“The Dissolve” is a Dionysian revelry with a space opera aesthetic.
“Wings of Wax” is the Icarus song, but I gender-flipped everything, because why not.
“Both My Homes are Real” is about Persephone, and the title pretty much captures the central concept. Sometimes you don’t want to choose between; you want to choose both.
“I Chose the Dark” is about how Artemis rejects the warmth, light, and family on Mount Olympus to hunt in the dark between stars. Because space opera aesthetic.
“Look Back” is Eurydice telling Orpheus that love lives in the moment of looking back, and not to regret it, because it’s what makes them human, and not unearthly gods.
“Different Every Time” is about Sisyphus becoming attached to the giant boulder.
“I Can See It From Here” is the album’s Cassandra song, but it has both a sci-fi and California surfing kind of twist to it.
“Don’t Call It Love” is Aphrodite’s song about how love isn’t soft and sweet. It’s destructive and reshapes everything around it.
Also, it’s the catchiest song on the album. Seriously.
“Always the Tree” is about how sometimes we deal with something being done to us by believing we chose it all along. In fact, that’s kind of a theme in this album.
That said, trees are cool. Being a tree does seem kind of awesome.
There wasn’t originally going to be a song about Leda and the swan on this album, but after “Always the Tree,” it seemed called for thematically.
Besides, I love the Zombies’ “Imagine the Swan,” so it’s nice mirroring that title with “Embrace the Swan.”
“Born Complete” is a song about Athena being fascinated by how mortals grow and change, lamenting that she missed out on that by having been born fully formed from Zeus’s brow.
