I’ve been showing movies I loved in high school when they came out to my kid & it’s troubling how they all seem to have become Important Works In Film History.
Kid: stares blankly at movie I said was impressive
Me: “Well, um, see, no movie had ever done that before back then.”
Me: “Look, they had to invent whole new technologies to film The Matrix! The T1000 was the fanciest special effect I’d ever seen!”
The 13-year-old learned a harsh lesson today about googling 20-year-old movies before watching them if you want to be surprised.
On the flip side, I learned that they’ve started filming a Scream 5!
I think part of what I love so much about the Scream franchise is that it has such a clear understanding of how incredibly ominous it is when men violate a woman’s space and consent in even seemingly minor ways.
Stand too close? Grab her arm? Possibly a psycho serial murderer.
Another thing I love about the Scream movies is that the absolute toughest woman — hard as nails — gets the absolute softest boy. Gail and Dewey are the heart of those movies.
