The Otter’s Sketchbook

by Mary E. Lowd

She doesn’t draw every fish she sees
Only the ones
That catch her eye
With a gleam of silver
Or a splashing tail
—fish she wishes to reach out & touch
Without scaring them—
So she touches them
With the tip of a quill instead
Etching their scales
Into a notebook’s papery entrails
