Yellowjackets is a wish-fulfillment show.
The wish is that middle-aged women get to be complicated and broken, but still receive empathy and be seen; that they get to commit atrocities like men do all the time and still have us rooting for them, still get centered in the story.
If you ever rooted for Walter White, you can root for Shauna Sadecki/Shipman.
It sure does say something that places have to keep banning AI-adjacent content to keep it from ending up on things like awards ballots. If it were all so terrible, that wouldn’t really be necessary, would it.
It’s really fascinating in a sad kind of way to watch people define themselves more by their hatred of AI than by the things they actually love.
The thing about people hating AI is that having empathy for robots has always felt like a pretty good litmus test for whether people would have empathy for me.
And yeah, those two things — fictional robots and current AI — aren’t exactly the same thing yet, but they will be long before the haters are willing to recognize it.
“This is not the only way to be, but it is the way that I am.”
