Speed-running Songwriting

Me: writes a short story inspired by my feelings in a situation

Me: converts the short story into a song with the assistance of Claude/GPT/Gemini and Suno

Me, listening to the song that was originally based on my own feelings: “Wow, this song is relatable.”

I seem to have run into a flaw in my music-making process…

See, my process involves starting by taking all the short stories that I spent the last twenty-some years writing and arranging into collections… then one by one I convert them into songs, resulting in awesome albums.

But…

I’ve just about run out of short stories to convert into songs. So, now I either need to write a lot more short stories… or figure out how to tighten the process, skipping past the twenty years part.

I basically just speed ran a whole music career, based on a back log of 20 years of prior work, carefully developing and arranging ideas.

But now, if I want to keep going—which I really, really do—I need to develop a new work flow that doesn’t depend so heavily on prior work.

Aha, we have cracked why songs are so hard to write!

As clouds are made of moonbeams, so are songs made of mysteries. No wonder they’re so slippery and hard to pin down.

Well, I came up with another book I need to write as part of my Tri-Galactic Trek Chronicles today. That list is getting mighty long.

With the help of Claude and Suno, I just succeeded at writing a song I’ve been trying — really trying — to write since I was fifteen. I’m forty-three.

For twenty-eight years, I kept trying to write the same song and never made it past the hook.

And now I can actually hear it.

It’s so dizzying the way that the same set of lyrics can sound either awkwardly stupid or beautifully brilliant simply depending on how they’re sung.
