Who Gets to Be Centered and Why

I’ve never seen The Goonies before & I guess the reveal of an abandoned pirate ship in a cave would be more impressive if I hadn’t played the Deadmines a ton in World of Warcraft… but I’m still mostly baffled by how this movie seems to be so fondly remembered.

We need more art centering women — LOTS MORE — for so many reasons, but one of them is men need more practice imagining the world through women’s eyes.

I’m so tired of men expecting their feelings to be treated as important while completely disregarding the feelings of women.

I’ve had my feelings totally disregarded & ignored by men I was theoretically close to for my entire life, let alone men who barely knew me. Those same men—close & distant—have turned around & expected me to treat their feelings like delicate, precious gems.

It’s exhausting.

From what I’ve seen, I suspect this dynamic isn’t unusual.

If you’re a man expecting a woman you don’t know extremely well to engage with your feelings — think about that.

Maybe take a turn being the empathetic one. Offer validation instead of looking for it.

I’ve just started watching Cougar Town. It has the same comedic rhythm as Scrubs, but stars Courtney Cox instead of Zach Braff. I don’t know if it’s good, but it’s comforting. And that makes me happy.

‪Except then I think about how Zach Braff’s show got to be centered on how he was a doctor, whereas Courtney Cox’s show centers on her sexuality, and that makes me mad…‬

‪It’s hard how happy and mad seem to be mixed together all the time. It makes me tired.‬
