I’m close to the end of the first season of Borgen… and it’s gotten really depressing. I don’t know if I should hold on, and it’ll turn around… or if a political show of this sort is just going to be something I find too depressing.
When I started watching Borgen and The Rain to practice listening to Danish, I really didn’t expect Borgen to be the one I’d be finding depressing.
Having a Bernese mountain dog in the Pacific Northwest in the spring is like living with your own personal mud golem.
On the strength of Lil’ Abner (1959) — which held up way better than I expected — I finally watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) which was written by the same songwriting team. It is not good. But it was fun seeing baby Riff (Russ Tamblyn) from Westside Story.
I always liked Riff — his curly blond hair, snub nose, and infectiously upbeat pursuit of fist fights always made me think of Captain Kirk. So Riff was like Star Trek but singing, sixty years before Star Trek actually did a musical.
Apparently, Russ Tamblyn also stars in a musical version of Tom Thumb. So, I may have to seek that out.
Having just finished Maybe Baby and Maybe Baby 2 (a.k.a. Bytte Bytte Baby and Bytte Bytte Barn), I was looking for another random Danish thing to watch and started Ehrengard, only to immediately be faced with Brigette Nyborg from Borgen and Martin from The Rain in the same scene!
My spouse and I after watching the latest Severance, passionately arguing about whether Burt or Fields is more likely to secretly be Kier Eagan when we both know perfectly well that we already saw him talking to Helly at the end of season 1, and he was definitely someone else.
Also, because of all the Danish Duolingo I’ve been doing, I strongly feel like Helly should be spelled with Ds instead of Ls. And maybe end with an IG.
