Engaging in the Name of Outreach (Or Not)

It would just be so incredibly cool if when people don’t understand a topic or really know anything about it, they would start by seeking out information with kindness and politeness instead of with cruelty, foisting assumptions at people, and general name calling.

Discussing the effects of AI was so much more fun before most of my little societies turned it into a purity issue where if you don’t express the Right and Correct beliefs you’re fair game for cruelty and name calling.

Now it all just feels high stakes and stressful every time.

Anyway, because of this, if you engage with me on the subject of AI, it’s probably gonna be inherently stressful for me, even if you personally are reasonable and nice about it.

Basically, artists and writers who are in favor of AI

—hide and won’t talk publicly about it
—have nerves of steel that are super human
—or are profoundly stressed whenever they engage in the name of outreach

So if you want to talk to them, be extra nice.

And if you think that artists and writers who are in favor of AI deserve to be called names and actively shamed for having a different set of philosophical beliefs that doesn’t cave to the popular opinion?

Just move on. I’m not the person for you.

There’s a metaphor I keep really, really, really wanting to make… and I think it’s just soooooo apt, actually. But I also know it won’t ever make any argument that I use it in go better. So, I don’t. And I just want to take this moment to recognize my willpower and restraint.
