I just finished writing a story about alittle lion with a mane of flowers, and I’m thinking of publishing it to Deep Sky Anchor
on Monday. It already has art from Midjourney, and my mom, who’s good enough to be a professional copy-editor, will probably look it over tomorrow.
“Sarah Flowermane and the Unicorn” started out as just a fun little thing for me to write as a break between novels, but it turned out really, really well. I actually feel kind of weird about the idea of “throwing away” its First Rights by self-publishing it…
There’s a lot of loss of agency in the world of writing today. We write stories, and then we send them to market after market, waiting years or longer to see them published, sometimes even after they’re accepted.
It starts to tear you apart. And I wrote this story for me.
Maybe no one will read “Sarah Flowermane and the Unicorn” if I publish it on Deep Sky Anchor, but maybe they will. And either way, I’ll be taking back something for myself.
Maybe it’d have a chance at a “Big” market. Maybe it wouldn’t. This time, I don’t want to wait to find out.
So, if you’re curious about the story of a little lion cub and how she grew a mane of flowers, check back on Monday, and there’ll be a heartwarming, sweet, magical tale waiting for you.
