I’m watching Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) and it was possibly the shiniest movie I’d ever seen for the first fifteen minutes… and then the humans started talking, and it’s pure sexist cliches. Such fun. Sigh.
The blending of stunningly beautiful and creative visuals with cringingly cliched dialogue in Valerian (2017) is absolutely mind-bending.
If the male lead in Valerian (2017) were instead played by a woman, or if the male and female leads swapped roles, or if every shred of potential romance between them were removed, I’d probably love this movie. As it is, I love some of the visuals… but overall, I kinda hate it.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, the dialogue would still be badly cliched, but at least the sexism would be mitigated.
I feel like I have a limited patience for sexism and most days I hit that limit somewhat early in the day and then I’m just lowkey bubbling with rage over sexism for the rest of it.
