Deep breath. It doesn’t feel like it today. BUT. I tried to watch Murphy Brown from the beginning, back when it got rebooted. And that’s a show that was ground-breakingly feminist for its time. And now… oh my god. It’s sooooooo full of sexist tropes. There are only two women, and they’re constantly at each other’s throats. Murphy is constantly put down for not being feminine enough. There’s a male character who exists basically to be passed off as “charming” and “likeable” while MASSIVELY transgressing her boundaries. He shows up in her house and is there at random, painting the walls, and making it clear to women viewers that they should never, ever feel safe, because men will be seen as charming while also putting those women in their place. So… yes. We’re winning. It is fucking exhausting.
