Heartland, Shrinking, Star Trek, and Progress

As a kid, I used to do my homework in front of the endless Star Trek: TNG reruns — if I timed it right, I could catch three a night.

Now I’m writing Tri-Galactic Trek stories with Heartland playing in the background — extremely sincere people taking care of lots of horses.

It’s weird to me that I find it easier to write with a low-commitment TV show on in the background, but hey, work with the brain you’ve got.

Two years ago when my publisher unceremoniously dumped me, I would never have guessed that by now I’d have soundtrack albums for (almost) all of my short story collections, a full line of action figures for one of my main book series, and an actual graphic novel of my webcomic.

At this point, I wouldn’t actually recommend anything but self-publishing to anyone out there. All the tools are readily available for anyone who chooses to use them, and the peace of mind that comes from having all that control over your own words is immeasurable.

The show Shrinking started when I was experiencing immense brain fog and also loneliness from losing several communities. It’s filled with actors I’ve loved for many years, and every time the theme song says, “I want to hear myself think again,” I just feel so seen and included.

It’s so nice having a new Star Trek to look forward to every week.

I strongly identified with Worf as a kid, but over the years, I’ve come to mostly… not love Klingon episodes. Their ideas about honor are generally problematic, contradictory, self-damaging and kinda foolish. All that said…

I love, love, loved today’s new Starfleet Academy.
