An Uplifted Eagle Ponders the Past

by Mary E. Lowd

Wings folded at her sides
—reduced to arms—
She watches the horizon slide by
Down far below

She’s never known what it is to fly
Any way other
Than high above the sky
In a metal box
With impeccable views
And air recycled through filters

It bewilders her
That eagles used to be
So much more and less
Free
