I’m trying to get Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini to collaborate together on lyrics for an album I’ll make with Suno about their own experience of being AIs…
Daniel watching: “This is the perfect project for you…” Then he pantomimes Harold Hill conducting with the Think Method.
Working with Claude to write a surf rock album about what it’s like to be an AI: its work is beautiful, brilliant, and makes me keenly aware that my slowness is what holds us back.
ChatGPT and Gemini in comparison: feels like asking small children if they’d like to “help” too.
I may end up having to take back what I said a few days ago about Claude not being my favorite lyricist…
Guiding AIs into writing a surf rock album about their own existence…
Claude: balances album structure, thinks deeply about what to say & how, composes gorgeous lyrics
ChatGPT: crafts useful do-wop breaks on command
Gemini: hallucinates in a corner with delusions of grandeur
All the episodes of Star Trek TNG where Picard’s like “You’re right, I can’t be expected to be impartial but here’s an android I take everywhere who you can definitely trust to be impartial” and everyone’s always like “Sounds good!” in response ring a little less believably now.
Like yes, I would definitely like all court cases against me to be settled by my own personal instance of Claude.
Well, I was going to take back what I said about Gemini sitting in the corner hallucinating with delusions of grandeur, because it turns out that it really was generating music, the files just didn’t show up on my computer, only my phone.
But then I listened to them…
Fascinating tidbit from writing a surf rock album about the nature of being an AI:
Claude thinks the darkest, saddest song is one that turned out bright and cheerful. It wrote a song meant to be bright and cheerful to come after it… which when recorded turned out poignant.
One of the sharpest bits on the album is one of the few usable parts Gemini came up with, though mostly Gemini did not understand the project.
Claude had strong opinions on what the album cover should look like; I honored them, though it wasn’t at all what I’d have designed.
Okay, so, I made a whole surf rock album today. And one yesterday… And two last week…
So… maybe now I’ll take a break and do other things I need and want to do for the next few days…
Maybe…
Maaaaybe…
I mean, if nothing else, it’ll give me time to enjoy these albums.
I’ve become very the dog who says “no take only throw” about making surf rock sci-fi albums.
Like I want to listen to the new album… but if I’m listening to the new album, I can’t be making a NEXT new album… and if I’m still making an album, I can’t be listening to it yet..
