Last night, I decided I needed more angry music to handle this week. My main angry music is American Idiot, which I love, but wasn’t hitting the right note.
So, I remembered that there’d been a bit of a newish Alanis Morissette song on Grey’s Anatomy a few weeks ago…
I’ve listened to Jagged Little Pill, and it’s undeniably important. But… I’m VERY particular about music, and while I want to like it… its sound is too much for me. I do like the acoustic version.
Still, the idea of a more recent Alanis Morissette album sounded appealing.
So, I got “Such Pretty Forks in the Road,” and it was exactly what I needed. I’ve listened to it nearly a dozen times since buying it last night.
Alanis Morissette’s vocals are so emotionally compelling, and I can hear the anger of her youth, tempered by age and experience.
It means so much to be able to listen to music by a woman just a handful of years older than me, wrestling with things like the emotional complexity of being an artist and also a parent, trying to find a space inside this world that doesn’t always fit right.
