That feeling when you’re trying to write, and the five-year-old is repeatedly bouncing a balloon off of your head… and you’re encouraging this behavior, because it’s less disruptive than so many other options. #NaNoWriMo

Things you don’t expect to ever say: “You need to try to hit my head and not my computer.”
Me: –sees a trailer for Good Omens & mentions David Tennant–
11-yr-old: “I thought he was dead…”
Me: … –bewildered, since 11-yr-old is a massive Whovian–
11-yr-old: “No, wait, that’s Davy Jones.”
Sometimes it feels like believing what I’m writing matters and is worth the effort is half the battle.
I woke up to Ella Fitzgerald singing, “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” and found the eleven-year-old had started Christmas.
Apparently the part of my brain that thought it was a good idea to put off writing my story for the Halloween reading until 4am the night before also decided I had too much of a lead on #NaNoWriMo… as such, I’ve failed to write anything today.

Things you don’t expect to have to say: “Can you draw more quietly, please?” But yes, the five-year-old found a way to scrape the pencils across the paper that was screechy and loud.
Prometheus (2012) is not a structurally satisfying film, but now that I’ve seen Alien: Covenant (2017), I guess I’ll grant that it’s not complete gibberish. And it does have some interesting parts. This is my lukewarm review of Prometheus.
Prometheus (2012) doesn’t really function as a stand-alone movie or even as an entry in the Alien movie franchise… but it’s pretty good (if a bit long) as a bonus extra piece of backstory.
The thing about the Alien movies is that they explore three of my favorite themes:
—robots are as morally ambivalent as humans
—biology walks a fine line between fascinatingly beautiful and deeply horrifying
—capitalism is evil
And now for a severe case of whiplash, it’s time to follow up Alien: Resurrection with the new episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
