Apparently, today is the day to catch the younger child up on classics they’ve somehow missed — so far we’ve watched Lilo & Stitch and The Secret of NIMH.
Now we’re watching Spirited Away.
I think Younger Child missed out on Lilo & Stitch because we watched it SO MUCH when Elder Child was little.
Elder Child was a mischievous little being when small and reminded us of… Stitch. No, not Lilo. Yes, Stitch.
Anyway, we all loved the movie and watched it a lot.
Spirited Away is a movie I removed from circulation when Elder Child was small.
In the way of small children, Elder Child would basically watch whatever their favorite animated movie of the week was on loop. Some movies (Toy Story + sequels) hold up to this.
Some do not….
Spirited Away has a lot to recommend it. So much magic and whimsy. But… the main character’s dubbed voice (when you have to watch these movies with kids who can’t read, you accept that dubbed is fine) is very, very, VERY whiny. I could not stand to hear it anymore.
Anyway, I never realized until today that the voice I struggle to put up with in Spirited Away is actually the same voice as performs Lilo.
I guess, the voice is a lot easier to take when performing a comedic role. Spirited Away is lovely, but it’s not terribly humorous.
